All over 50s invited to receive Covid booster and flu jabs

boost your immunity this winter with a flu and a covid vaccine

Thousands of people aged 50 and over will start receiving invitations for get a covid autumn booster and flu jab this week, after the NHS expanded the offer to all over 50s last week.

The rollout means that around 12 million more people will now be eligible for their vital autumn booster dose over the coming weeks.

More than seven million people have already had this autumn top-up to increase their immunity this winter, and with covid infections and hospitalisations rising in recent weeks, the NHS is urging anyone who is now eligible to come forward as soon as possible.

Those eligible for the Covid-19 booster includes those in care homes, health and social care workers, and those at higher risk due to a long-term condition, weakened immune system, a learning disability, or pregnancy – as well as anyone aged 50 and over.

And if you’re eligible for the COVID-19 booster, it’s likely you can get the free flu vaccination too. Getting both vaccines will be especially important this year because:

  • more people are likely to get flu this winter
  • you’re more likely to be seriously ill if you get flu and COVID-19 at the same time

The best time to have your flu vaccination is in early autumn or winter, before the flu starts spreading widely – although it’s never too late to be worthwhile.

Anyone eligible can book an appointment or search for local drop-in clinics now by using the National Booking Service online at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccine or by calling 119.

Meanwhile people can book in for their flu vaccinations as usual through their GP practice or by visiting one of the many thousands of participating community pharmacies nation-wide.

For more information about eligibility and a full list of pharmacies offering the free NHS flu vaccination, please visit the nhs.uk website.
